Distance Running – Key Races

The club’s members take part in a wide variety of road and cross country races and leagues throughout the year, some of which are only open to members of running clubs. These events range from local to national level at both senior and junior level. There is normally no limit on the number of runners or teams that can take part in these races with the club supporting its members when they take part in events which form the backbone of club running.

York 10k Road Race League

The club takes part in the York 10k Road Race League which you have to be a member of a local running club in York to take part in. The league is a great series of 10k road races which take place annually in the early summer. There are seven events that are all close to York, and are great for all standards of runners from those looking to run personal best times to those who enjoy running in the pleasant countryside around York.

Each race tends to attract around 350 runners from all the clubs in York with the finishing times ranging from 35 to 75 minutes. Not only do you get to run local 10k races but you also get to make new friends from the friendly York club running scene. All for just £20, which is a bargain for seven races.

West Yorkshire Cross Country League

Cross country running has been a traditional feature of the British distance running scene for many years. Cross country running is good for building up strength and endurance due to the undulating nature of the courses and the variety of underfoot conditions that are encountered. This improved stamina and endurance then helps runners achieve personal best times on either the road or track.

The club takes part in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League which comprises of a series of four races during the autumn at venues in West Yorkshire. Every age group is catered for from under 11s through to seniors with around 50 runners taking part in each the junior races and 150 in the senior races.

The dates for the 2023 are as follows:

  • Sunday October 8th – Guiseley
  • Sunday October 29th – Wakefield
  • Saturday November 18th – Middleton Park, Leeds
  • Sunday December 10th – Oulton

Club Championships

The club is a keen supporter of championships races at Yorkshire, North of England and National level. For our faster runners they represent a chance to win a coveted championship titles whilst for other runners there is a chance to count in the team event or to rub shoulders with the next Mo Farah. Championship events cater for a broad standard of club runners are not just for elite runners and cater for all age groups from under 13s to seniors.

There are championship cross country races as well as relay events both on the road and cross country which take place in the spring and autumn. The club strongly supports the relay events because they are exciting and great for team spirit.
