Weekly Round up – w/e 17th March

Indoor Track and Field

Five athletes from the club competed in the Indoor pentathlon at Gateshead. A very popular meeting, with athletes from a wide area.

Carys Francis had an amazing day to win by a huge amount and had 4 firsts and 1 second in the 5 events on the day, gaining big personal bests in all 5. She started with 9.07 in the 60 hurdles – 2nd fastest in UK this year, and 36th on UK All Time List. Then 11.02 in the shot (English Schools Entry is 10.60, 11.02 was in UK top 20 last year). 5.20m long jump (English Schools entry 5.10, and 5.20 got 4th last year), 1.52 high jump (that got 4th in English Schools last year), and 8.14 in the 60m which finishes the competition.

Our other athletes also had very good sets of results and a useful competitive outing. Sophia Horsfall-Samb was 5th with 4 personal bests, Juliette Macquin-Jones 6th with 3 personal best (they being the first 2 Year 8), Holly Nash 7th with 2 personal bests. 26 athletes took part in the competition with 4 City of York athletes finishing in the top 7.

In the boys U17 competition, Ben Foulger had a good day trying some events competitively for the first time. Ben finished 4th out of 6 athletes with 3 new personal bests.

Weekly round up of Distance Running Races

Some of the clubs juniors finished their cross country season at the English Schools Cross Country Championships whilst the club’s seniors and veterans took to the roads as they started to prepare for their summer seasons.

Cross Country Racing

14 runners from the club were selected to run in the prestigious English Schools Cross Country Championships at Pontefract Racecourse. Isaac Stabler obtained the highest position of the club’s runners as he came 11th in the Intermediate Boy’s race narrowly missing out on a coveted top 10 finish. The club was well represented in the junior girl’s race as we had five runners in this race with Nina Hopkins (181th), Imogen Brown (221st), Aimee Keefe (250th), Kate Wilcock (265th) and Emily Rycroft (271st) all taking part. Lottie Langan (44th) led home four runners from the club in the Senior Girl’s race with Jessica Robertson-Dover (112nd), Amy Kennedy (132nd) and Katarina Savkovic (150th) all being close together. Lucas Stabler came 208th in the Senior Boys’ race whilst Sophie Robertson-Dover (77th), Isabel Madden (141st) and Kate Setchell (230th) ran in the Intermediate Girls’ race.

Road Racing

Five runners went to Leicester to do the Podium 5k road race with four of them running PBs. Gianluca Mastrolonardo was under 15 minutes for the first time as he ran 14.47. Finnian Hutchinson was just outside that benchmark as he ran a PB of 15.05. MarK Bolland-Cage took 3 seconds off his PB with 15.34 with Simon Bolland-Cage running 15.31. Martha Calton-Seal ran her first race since November as she ran a PB of 17.22, a time which put her 4th on the all time club rankings for 5k on the road.

Six of the club’s veterans ran in the Vale of York 5 mile & 10 mile races that were held in continuous rain at Rufforth airfield. Steve Wright was 1st vet 60 in 32.31 with the club dominating the vet 45 category with Allan Scott being 2nd in 30.35, Gary Ibbotson 3rd in 33.24, Mike Raynes 4th in 38.38 and John Lewis 7th in 35.17. Laurie Parker took on the 10 miles race and ran 1.24.02.

Josh Breen continued his improvement as he took a few seconds off his PB with 58.43 in the 10 miles race at Thirsk.

Parkrun

10 runners from the club did parkrun over the weekend. James Bastow came 3rd at Easingwold in 19.15 with Josh Reid running a PB at the Knavesmire with 20.46. There were junior age group wins for Wilson Moisey-Smith and Bethany Ellerker with veteran age group wins for Jon Blake and Steve Wright.
