U15 Development Group

This group train between 6.15-7pm on a Monday and 6-8pm on a Wednesday. The sessions enable athletes from age 10*-14 (school years 5-9) to further develop their skills of running, jumping and throwing in a fun and safe environment. *Athletes cannot join this group until after their 10th birthday and providing they have a good training age (experience of athletics training for 6 months+ and/or competitions). This group will challenge athletes in terms of their fitness and skill development and will give them the confidence to compete in the Youth Development League competitions and other local and national competitions throughout the athletics season.

Monday – Athletes should arrive at 6pm and register in the clubhouse..

From the beginning of November until the end of February (6.15-7pm) the athletes will be involved in ‘winter training’ – longer running sessions and strength and conditioning workouts.

From the beginning of March until the end of October (6.15-7pm) the athletes can experience the following activities:

  • Pole Vault with Ian Noble
  • Throws with Jonathan Sewell and Amanda Schofield
  • High Jump and Hurdles with Craig Pounder

Sessions for older and more experienced athletes run from 7-8pm. They are:

  • Long Jump with Peter Stanton
  • Sprints with Chelsea Wyard
  • Middle Distance with Ian Wilcock

Athletes in the development group may be able to attend these sessions although this needs to be arranged with individual coaches and priority will be given to older athletes. These later sessions run all year.

Wednesday – Athletes should arrive at 5.50pm, register in the club house and be ready to begin the warm-up and drills at 6pm. From the beginning of November until the end of February (6-7pm) the athletes will be involved in ‘winter training’ – longer running sessions and strength and conditioning workouts.

From the beginning of March until the end of October (6-7pm) the athletes can experience the following activities:

  • Long Jump with Craig Pounder
  • Sprints with Dawn Britton
  • Middle Distance with Elaine Wilcock
  • Throws with Jonathan Sewell
  • Hurdles with Dave Paver
  • High Jump with Bob Williams

The main activities will begin at 6pm when the athletes will be divided into six age-related groups. Six activities will be offered each week and athletes will have the opportunity to experience two within the hour session – 6-6.30pm Activity 1 and 6.30-7pm Activity 2.

From 7-8pm (start of March to end of October) there will be multi-events training which will include:

  • Long Jump
  • Sprinting
  • Hurdles
  • Shot

Middle Distance
This training will be with Craig Pounder and Steph Hopkin and is open to any athlete in the development group who wishes to attend.

Athletes should be strongly encouraged to avoid specialising in any particular event before the age of 15. However, if the athlete has a strong interest in an activity which is not offered in the multi-events session, they may be able to access the following sessions at the discretion of the individual coaches.

These sessions run all year.
